Documents required

The documents necessary to apply to receive citizenship are the following:

  • Sample application (downloaded via the Internet or written on site in Bulgarian during the application).
  • Birth certificate or certificate replacing the missing one in the case where you lack the former.
  • A determination by the State Agency of Refugees confirming your refugee or humanitarian status.
  • Criminal record certificate.
  • A document of the prosecutor’s office indicating that no proceedings have been made to prosecute you for an intentional crime of a general type.
  • A certificate from your employer stating that you are working in a legal organisation or the tax office, where you have declared income received during the last year. 
  • A certificate of paid compulsory insurance.

  • A medical certificate provided by the medical advisory committee of the medical establishment where you are receiving services at your current residence, indicating you do not have a cute, contagious or infectious disease.
  • Model declaration: If your name is changed, an official document stating such, and an official identity document to a person with a different name.
  • Recent passport-size photograph, 1 copy.
  • A copy of your identity card.
  • Evidence of payment of the state tax of BGN 100 to the account of the Ministry of Justice.

Bulgarian citizenship application: language diploma & Interview Guidelines

In case you possess a certificate or a diploma for a completed course on the Bulgarian language, you should bring it to the attention of verification to the following centre.  Which is situated at: Sofia, 125, Tsarigradsko shose blvd., bl. 5, f. 2 between 9.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on weekdays. The Ministry of Justice has another 18 months to pass the decision about the application of Bulgarian citizenship.
