Many expats consider Greece to be more than simply a location to reside; it’s a way of life, a slower pace that is difficult to resist once experienced. Life here is a mix of old and contemporary, with remains from thousands of years ago adjacent to vibrant tavernas where people laugh late into the night. But how does day-to-day living as an expat in Greece really look like?

A lifestyle centred on connection

Greeks know how to enjoy life. Food, family, and community are the most important things in life here. If someone asks you to coffee quickly, don’t be shocked if the discussion lasts for hours. People don’t often hurry through meals; instead, they use them as a chance to interact. It’s not just food; it’s culture. Fresh veggies from the market, seafood fresh from the sea, and olive oil from a nearby farm. For those who are accustomed to live quickly, this calmer, more planned way of life seems like a blessing. You may need to get used to it at first, but once you do, you’ll wonder how you ever lived any other way.

Costs and comforts

In Greece, money goes a different way. Life is shockingly cheap outside of tourist traps like Mykonos or Santorini. A little flat in Paris or London could cost a lot more than a coastal property in Crete or Thessaloniki. Eating out isn’t a luxury but a normal part of life. Taverns provide big meals at fair pricing. Of course, earnings are lower than in many Western nations, thus a lot of expats work from home or run enterprises in other countries. Still, it’s hard to top the trade-off: fewer bills and more sunsets.

Work, opportunities and making it work

It might be hard to find job. The employment market is tough, and knowing Greek might help a lot. That being said, expats who know a lot about IT, tourism, or education typically find ways to make money. People are more likely to carry their job with them, like teaching online, operating a company from a distance, or freelancing. Greece is also appealing to businesspeople, particularly with programs like the Golden Visa that make it easier for them to live there. It’s not the easiest location to start a career from scratch, but if you have a strategy, it can be quite lucrative.

Learning the language and embracing the people

Greek isn’t a simple language, but knowing a few words may help a lot. A simple “Kalimera” (good morning) may get you in, and locals will appreciate any attempt you make to speak their language. What makes living in Greece remarkable is how kind the people are. You’ll soon be asked to family meals, village festivals, or to drink homemade wine with your neighbours. Greece seems like home because of that feeling of belonging; of being more than simply a stranger.

Family and education

Greece may be a great spot for expats with kids to grow a family. Children grow up in a place where history, nature, and a society that really cares about them are all around them. Public schools are free, although it might be hard to get used to the language at first. Many families from other countries choose private or international schools, notably in Athens and Thessaloniki, where the lessons are in line with what is taught across the world. What kids get, however, is priceless: a childhood full of culture, community, and a feeling of being aware of the world around them.

Health and well-being

In Greece, there are both public and private choices for healthcare. Public care is easy to get and not too expensive, but you could have to wait a long time. A lot of expats go to private clinics or get insurance to get care quickly. But in everyday life, health frequently comes easily here. The weather, the food, and the way of life all come together to provide a lifestyle that seems healthier and more balanced than in a lot of other locations.

Joys and challenges

Of course, living as an expat in Greece has its own problems. It might seem like the paperwork, stamps, and appointments never stop when you’re dealing with bureaucracy. The speed of service at the bank or town hall could make new people angry. But then you go outside and see the sea shining in the sun, or you joke with your neighbour, and all of your anger goes away. Greece teaches you to be patient, and in exchange, it offers you something far better: peace of mind.

Final thoughts

Living in Greece isn’t about being flawless but about being there. It’s about lengthy meals that last into the night, boat excursions to secret islands, talking to strangers who quickly become friends, and an everyday existence full with history and beauty. People who move to a new country typically do so for the views, but they remain for the way of life, the warmth, and the feeling of belonging. Greece isn’t simply a location to live, it is a way of life. And for a lot of people, that’s all that matters.

You can also view these posts:
Greece through the eyes of investors
Getting Greece passport
Traveling to Greece: Visa requirements

There’s something amazing about waking up to the sound of church bells ringing through tiny alleys, having a coffee at a local kafeneio, and feeling the Aegean wind on your skin.
