This office is your initial contact; they will tell you the forms to be filled out, what documents to bring and the amount to pay.

Do your naturalisation test

All the people eligible to obtain the citizenship of Germany between the ages of 16 and 67 years are obliged to register with the Federal Office of Migration and Refugees (BAMF) at these test centres. In case you pass it, the BAMF will give you a certificate of your test result that you will submit alongside other documents.

Send your application

When it is all ready, you need to hand them in to the local office of the nationality authority. It can be done online or in the office, depending on the office.

Pay the application fees. The application fee is 255 euros for an adult and 55 euros for a child under 18.

Wait till the application is processed

The decision process requires not least 18 months. Throughout this time, authorities consider such requirements as your residence of at least five years, among others.

When the application is positive. You will be required to attend a naturalisation ceremony where you will be given your certificate of naturalisation. You become a German citizen with this.

Should you not know to which office you should direct your application, you may also contact the nearest city administration office (Stadtverwaltung), District administration office (Kreisverwaltung), borough office (Bezirksamt) or foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde).

Citizenship Test

The documents that are required to apply for Citizenship

To naturalise as a German citizen, you must hand in the following documents:

Identity documents

As a rule, you need to provide a copy of your passport. However, in case, due to some reason, you do not have the possibility to submit your passport, then an ID card, a driving license, or a travel document of a stateless person can be submitted.

Civil status documents

The different civil status documents that you will be required to submit depending on your situation include a marriage certificate, birth certificate, and divorce decree.

Permanent right of residence

The permanent right of residence or long-term residence permit can be proved with an electronic residence permit (eAT). A temporary residence permit might also suffice for the requirements of naturalisation in the case of a skilled worker or a family reunification visa.

The document should prove that a person has lived in Germany for the last five years. Any of the following documents can prove you have been residing in Germany in the past five years:

Your pension insurance files.

A payslip.

A certificate of enrolment in a university.

Certificates for training courses.

School reports.

Bank statements proving payment on cards in Germany, or evidence of monetary support.

You may provide documents such as your employment contract, payslips, or income tax assessment to demonstrate that you can support yourself and your family members.

German knowledge: To demonstrate that you can speak German at least at the B1 level, you may submit either of the following documents, depending on your case:

Certificate of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) confirming that you have attended a language course.

German Test for Immigrants (DTZ) certificate.

Proof that you attended a German-speaking school for at least four years.

Your leaving certificate of lower secondary school (Hauptschulabschluss).

A certificate of having attended the tenth grade of secondary school.

Your degree diploma from a university (including universities of applied sciences).

You can also view these posts:
Main reasons why visa in Germany gets denied
Traveling to Germany: Visa requirements
Things to know before immigrating to Germany

In the new Nationality Law, you can gain citizenship in Germany when you have lived in Germany for at least five years.
