Residence permit document in Italy

The residence permit of Italy is a document that allows it holder to legally reside in Italy. Depending on its type and the reason, upon which it has been issued, it may also allow or prohibit other activities, such as conducting business.

Residence permit types

The Italy's government issues the following types of residence permits:

  • Residence permits valid for between three months and five years, indicating the specific reason for stay, locally also known as:
    • Permessi di soggiorno con validità da tre mesi a un massimo di cinque anni, recanti l’indicazione dello specifico motivo del soggiorno
  • Long-term residents’ EU residence permit, locally also known as:
    • Permesso di soggiorno Ue per soggiornanti di lungo periodo
  • Long-term residents’ EU residence permit ‘Former EU Blue Card) holder’, locally also known as:
    • Permesso di soggiorno Ue per lungo soggiornanti 'ex titolare Carta blu'
  • Residence permits valid for up to three months issued for one of the following reasons: Sporting event, Mission, locally also known as:
    • Permessi di soggiorno con validità massima di tre mesi, rilasciati per uno dei seguenti motivi: Gara sportiva, Missione
  • Permanent residence card, locally also known as:
    • Carta di soggiorno con validità permanente
  • Residence card of a family member of a Union citizen, locally also known as:
    • Carta di soggiorno di familiare di un cittadino dell’Unione
